Crich bonfire and fireworks

On Monday 5 November, hundreds turned out to enjoy the local village bonfire and fireworks display. Thanks to all of the support, a significant amount has been raised to go towards next year's Crich Village Fête. If you want to give some feedback to the Fête committee about the event, why not log on to the forum and share your views.

Here are a few photos of the night. If you have any of your own that you would like to see in the next edition of CACN, send them to editor@cacn.org.uk.

Update on Barbara's walk

As reported in the previous issue of CACN, Barbara Swift is walking part of the Great Wall of China as a fundraising event on behalf of Arthritis Research. Barbara has now finished her walk but she sent her blog back to us here at CACN online - read it here.

You can also leave messages of congratulations for her on the forum.

If any reader would like to support her walk there is a sponsor form in the Crich Chemist where she works. You can also sponsor her online by going to: www.justgiving.com/barbaraswift. All the money raised will go to Arthritis Research.

New to the village and you like fishing?

Why not drop in at the Jovial Dutchman and chat to ‘mine host’ Adrian Worthy? He will be happy to share local knowledge with you.

If you have other interests why not use the forum - someone will be sure to help.

If you want to involve new blood in your group then why not use the magazine to let folk know what you are doing and how to become involved.

There are many groups in our parish who would love to welcome new members - using the magazine is free (and easy). Make your presence known.

The Scarecrow Trail was most successful and popular raising £1003 for Crich Church Choir. A huge “thank you” to all who created the scarecrows and to those who supported the event financially.

Farewell Mrs Stinson

The Headteacher of Crich Infant School retired at the end of last term after working at the school for 25 years, sixteen of them as Headteacher.

Children, staff, parents and governors attended a ‘Yard Party’ at the school to bid Mrs. Stinson farewell. She was presented with a garden bench as a token of appreciation from staff, parents and governors.

"Thank you for choosing this school for your child and thus allowing me to share precious time with them.

"I have enjoyed ‘almost’ every minute of the many years I have spent at this school and feel privileged to have been its Head teacher and teacher.

"I have been very fortunate to have worked with many wonderful, caring and hard working staff.

"I leave ‘my’ school with happy memories and wish everyone at Crich the very best for the future."

Crich Village Fête

Saturday 14th July 2007

Thankfully the weather held off and it turned out to be a lovely afternoon. The fete committee using some of its funds to buy a day’s sunshine was money well spent!

The event was opened by Barbara Haslam who has been very active in village life. She was the cub leader for a great many years, a receptionist at the doctors, school governor and parish councillor. Barbara still sings in the Church Choir.

The attractions included a display by the Fly Ball Dogs, our own village Egyptian Dancers and fire twirling. Music was provided by Crich Brass Band. There was also a flypast by a Lancaster bomber.

As well as entertainment there were many stalls where local organisations promoted and raised money for their cause.

A huge “Thank you” to the Village Fete Committee for all their hard work in putting together such an enjoyable community event.

Garry Maggs, Roger Bode, Phil Dolby, Paul Sayles, Joyce Sayles, Trish Howard and June Chorley please take a bow.

HMS ORMONDE: a coincidence

In the obituary for Doctor Twist in the September issue it mentioned that he served on HMS Ormonde during WW2. This name rang a bell with Crich resident Mrs Hilda Turner. Several years ago, at a car boot sale, she bought a wooden fruit bowl made of teak. The inscription said that it had been made from the timbers of HMS Ormonde. Mrs. Turner had great pleasure in contacting Dr. Twist’s son, Tim, to see if he would like the bowl as a memento. Tim was delighted to accept the kind offer and it now has pride of place in his home.

The ORMONDE was built in 1917 for the Orient Steam Navigation Company. Launched in June 1918, she was converted from coal to oil burning in 1923. Requisitioned as a troopship in 1939, she took part in the evacuations from Norway and France. In November 1942 she was present at the North African landings and later at Sicily and Italy. In 1944 she was based at Bombay for Far East trooping work and returned to commercial service in 1947 as an emigrant vessel to Australia. She was sold for breaking up at Dalmuir, Scotland in December 1952.

Mobile Tips

Flat battery?

Your mobile battery is very low, you are expecting to make or receive an important call and you don’t have a charger. Nokia mobiles come with a reserve battery. To activate the battery key in *3370# your cell will restart with this reserve and your phone will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.

Emergency?

The emergency number for mobiles worldwide is 112. If you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you. Interestingly this number 112 can be dialled even when the keypad is locked.

Useful Website

Amber Valley Borough Council have a most useful site at: http://www.ambervalley.gov.uk

You can see information about your property, look at local planning applications that may affect you and see the actual plans, see which trees have preservation orders on them, check refuse collection details, check the weather and much more.

There are also so lots of interesting facts and figures about our parish.

Where is this seat?

Picture of stone seat

Tucked away largely unnoticed is a small piece of our local history. This stone seat was one of three provided by the Misses Hurt for Whatstandwell parishioners to rest on their way to Crich Church. It is now partly hidden, unusable and forgotten. Its twin is on Sandy Lane giving beautiful views across to the Stand and to the Church.

Wouldn’t it be nice if this one could be placed where it might be used?

Wedding bells

Adrian Worthy and Michelle Redfern of the Jovial Dutchman married at St Mary’s on the 1st September. The reception was at the “Memory of China” followed by evening entertainment back at the Jovial Dutchman.

They wish to thank everyone who attended their wedding for making the day so special for them and were appreciative of all the best wishes and gifts from so many friends and customers.

More wedding bells

Starting off on the right lines

Why do people go to Bali, Acapulco or Las Vegas to be married when everything can be performed to perfection in Crich? That was the view of the many guests who came from all over the country and beyond to our daughter’s wedding at the beginning of September. Very few had been to this part of the country before and not only were they clearly impacted by the beauty but mightily impressed by the warmth and efficiency of all the local individuals and agencies that seemed to be part of a concerted community matrimonial service.

First was the visiting photographer who framed his hands around St.Mary’s and exclaimed how the building just lent itself to photos. Then the bells rang out, the choir led, the flower arrangements bloomed and the sun almost shone. The reception was at the Tramway Village and here again everyone was bowled over by the commitment of the staff under Alison, some of whom must have done a 15 hour shift that day. Their smooth professionalism, warmth, patience and engagement not to mention the decorated trams, the extraordinarily delicious food and astounding views captivated the guests.

But all the surrounding service too was frequently remarked upon – everything from manicuring to police bollards to organ grinding, the good nature of the taxi drivers, the luxurious local accommodation with hosts who insisted on driving guests to the venue, the interest and conversation in the local pubs, cafes and shops. Good times were being had in the Jovial Dutchman as well, where Adrian and Michelle were celebrating their own wedding. And finally the PITZ who rocked everyone into pulsating oblivion at midnight.

As the visitors repaired to homes from Bournemouth to Barcelona and beyond, they took with them some very positive impressions and a determination to return with family and friends to see more of Crich and its surroundings.
