Picture of Crich Stand

U3A for Ripley and District.

U3As, what are they?
The initials stand for University of the Third Age. U3As are self –help groups formed for those no longer in full-time employment who would like to keep their minds active and meet socially with others who wish to do the same.

Any qualifications needed?
No, you do not need to have a degree or any qualifications at all to join– only enthusiasm.

What is involved?
Interests groups are formed and run by the members. It offers the opportunity to share your knowledge, experience and talents with others and learn from them in a friendly way. You do not need to be an ‘expert’ just a willingness to share your interests and discover new ones.

How often do the groups meet?
This will be entirely a group decision. Usually the interests groups meet fortnightly with a monthly general meeting where all groups get together but this could vary depending on the subject. You may not want to continue with your walking group in the depths of winter for instance. However you can join as many groups as you like.

How much will it cost?
There is an annual subscription of no more than £15. This pays for hiring halls, paying speakers and general running costs. If the groups meet in each others homes a small donation for tea and coffee is usual. If larger venues are needed then members normally make a small donation towards costs. It also brings other benefits like insurance for trips, access to U3A resources, competitive computer hardware deals and much more.
