We are planning a high-value programme for members next season, including some of the latest movies as well as classics of world cinema. Two of the seven slots will be left empty until the New Year to allow us to show very recent releases, subject to availability.
(UK, 121 mins)
Highly acclaimed British comedy by director Edgar Wright in which a London cop is moved to a sleepy Somerset town, where his tough metropolitan background is at odds with the laid-back surroundings.
(France/ USA, 112 mins)
This tells the story of 'Jean-Do' Bauby, the editor of Elle, who suffered a paralytic stroke and was only able to communicate by blinking an eye. Despite this, he was able to dictate a memoir which was finished just days before his death. Directed by Julian Schnabel, the film has won many awards including Best Director at Cannes (2007).
(Mongolian, 87 mins)
Combining drama and documentary, this is a lovingly observed and fascinating journal of day-to-day survival in the Mongolian Gobi desert. For a family of herders who happily eke out their living in this remote dustbowl, crisis comes in the shape of a newborn camel rejected by its mother after an agonising birth. We are hoping to get a speaker to talk about living in Mongolia before the film.
(China, 125 mins)
Frequently considered a landmark of Chinese cinema, this is the story of a young student (played by Gong Li) forced to become a concubine to an ageing warlord in 1920s China. Set in his palatial compound, the film shows the intrigues among the wife, concubines and servants in glowing colour. We are hoping to get a Chinese theme for this evening including some food.
(USA, 123 mins)
Based on a true story, "The Great Debaters" chronicles the journey of a group of underdog students from a small Deep-South African American college. They are, using the power of words, shaped into a historically elite debate team by Professor Melvin Tolson, a brilliant but volatile debate-team-coach.
We will pick two films from the crop of excellent films currently being released.
