Dear Editor,
It was great to see my letter printed in issue no. 52 (Winter 2009) p6 of the CACN, but I was a bit sorry about a misprint or, rather, omission until I checked and saw that the error was mine!
So I would like to apologise to the two hundred and forty-eight thousand evacuees who were not mentioned in the piece, as the number of children sent away was 250,000 not two thousand! I have read over my letter so many times and never once noticed the mistake. One should never edit one’s own work, but in this case who would have realised it was the wrong figure – maybe another evacuee?
By the way, Mr S R Witham who also wrote to you, might be interested to learn of, if he hasn’t already, the Evacuees Reunion Association – details can be found on the internet.
Congratulations on producing such a great little magazine!
Yours sincerely,
Gloria Weston (née Gossiaux)

Dear Editor
Just before Christmas I had to collect my daughter from a party late one Saturday evening only to find that my car was unable to climb the notorious “Bobbin Mill Hill!” After several attempts I gave up and returned home to think of plan B, when there was a knock on the door. I was greeted by a local young guy and his friends who had taken pity on me; they had used their sledges to carry grit from the grit box and had proceeded to grit the road for me, therefore enabling me to collect my daughter.
I have no real idea of who they were but I would just like to say “Thank you” to them through your pages. It just goes to prove that our much criticised youths are most definitely not all bad!!
Thank you
Helen Dawes

Dear Editor
The Eighth Charity Dance was held on the 28th November 2009 at the Glebe Field Centre.
About 130 enthusiastic friends braved the bitterly cold weather and enjoyed the dance of 50s and 60s music with the band REMOULD.
A pie and pea supper plus raffle was provided, and raised the fantastic sum of £1244 which will be presented to the Colorectal (Bowel Cancer) Fund at the Royal Derby Hospital.
Val and John Greenhough would like to thank everyone who helped make the evening such a huge success once again. A big ‘thank you’ to Lynn and Brian for their help with providing tickets and Brian’s special raffle. Also, thank you to everyone who gave donations and raffle prizes.
From the feedback everyone enjoyed themselves so much that it is hoped there will be another charity dance in 2010.

Thank you to generous donors
Part of a thank-you letter sent to Janet Patilla. She thought that supporters of this event might like to know where their donations went and how effective their generosity has been.
BREAKTHROUGH BREAST CANCER
Dear Janet,
Thank you so much for your recent generous donation of £700, which we were delighted to receive as a result of your Garden Plant Give-Away. Your hard work and commitment means we can keep making a real difference to the lives of people affected by breast cancer. On behalf of everyone at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, please extend our thanks to all those who helped make your fundraising such a success.
We’ll be putting your donation to work immediately and we wanted to let you know that your fundraising could pay for a ‘vortex’, used by scientists to mix together the ingredients for experiments. This equipment is essential for finding new ways to treat breast cancer. Not only this, but your fundraising could also pay for a ‘transilluminator’ which allows scientists to study DNA during experiments and enables them to investigate genetic changes in breast cancer cells.
These are vital resources in our Research Centre and Units.
