By the time this article is published I do hope we shall have a replacement for the post box in Fritchley which we lost when the post office closed. One is planned for the village green but the Post Office has to check with all of the utilities before they choose the exact position to ensure no pipes or cables are damaged. Unfortunately the utilities do not seem to respond very quickly and, as I write, this is what is holding the job up. All we as a Parish Council can do is keep putting pressure on the Post Office. We do understand how difficult it is, particularly for the elderly and infirm, to manage without a post box in the centre of the village.

Parishioners will be aware from the last issue of CACN that there is a controversy about whether the Parish Council should take on the financial responsibilities of the trustees of the Sims Trust which ran out of money some years ago. The trustees have now presented a petition to the Parish Council which we shall consider prior to the next round of grants. In the meantime the Sims trustees have secured alternative funding for the current year, as they did last year.

In order to simplify the decision-making process for grants to local groups we have formulated some criteria which groups will be expected to fulfil, although there may be some occasions when some discretion will be exercised. In future, applications for grants must be made by 1st November in each year on a form obtainable from the Clerk, accompanied by the organisation’s latest accounts or financial statement. A list of the eligibility criteria for grants can also be obtained from the Clerk.

A dialogue has been set up between the Parish Council and The Briars which we hope will enable us to minimise problems and promote greater understanding between The Briars and nearby residents.

Some further remedial work is planned for the surface of School Lane which should improve access to the school.
