The Parish Council's notice boards are gradually being replaced by new ones which have a section for parishioners to use. This facility is only for local, voluntary, non-commercial interests and any notices posted by individuals or groups who do not fit these criteria will be removed. We hope that by providing this facility we will reduce the incidence of fly-posting.
The flowers around the parish were so popular last year that we have ordered more for this summer and hope they will help to cheer everyone up during these rather gloomy economic times. The flowers are part of our efforts to brighten up and improve the parish generally, for which we have set up a special projects group.
There were problems during the winter in keeping grit bins filled and these were exacerbated by people stealing the grit (and in some cases the bins) for use on their own properties. We have already ordered some extra grit bins and we plan another parish walk before next winter during which we shall identify places to put yet more.
Derbyshire County Council have made good the damage done to Fritchley village green by their gritting lorry, but unfortunately shortly after the area had been re-seeded someone drove a car over it!
Concern about speeding on our lanes never goes away, and over the last year we have become increasingly worried about the number of accidents occurring on The Common and Bullbridge Hill. Our new Safer Neighbourhood Team of PC Wilbourne and PCSO Donna Shaw have taken these concerns on board and we have had traffic police in the parish on several days doing speed and other checks. Unfortunately, Derbyshire County Council have not as yet taken our worries as seriously as the police have, but we are still pursuing a request for traffic calming and other safety measures. Included in these is an initiative to get some of our lanes designated as "Greenways" to try to make them safer for non-motorised traffic.
Planning permission has now been granted for the new medical centre to be built behind The Glebe and we all look forward to the new facilities it will offer.
The other planning issue which will have a significant impact on us, though not in our parish, is the proposed new housing development on the former Stevensons site. The parish council is keeping in touch with the public consultations and contributing its views.
Plans to open a Youth Club at The Glebe are progressing well. The police have bought some equipment for it and are helping us to find volunteers to run it. We are also working in co-operation with St Mary's Church and receiving the support of the Glebe management committee, so it is very much a joint venture which is great for our community.
