Clerk: Clive Ludlam

Derbyshire County Council are encouraging members of the public to report problems with highway maintenance. This can be done by ringing their "Call Derbyshire" number (08456 058 058). This same number can be used to notify the County Council of other problems within their remit. There was recently an incident of substantial damage being done to signs, walls etc. in Wheatcroft by a lorry which was too large to negotiate the narrow lanes. If parishioners know of similar problems on any of our roads the Parish Council would encourage them to ring "Call Derbyshire" to request "unsuitable for large vehicles" signs. Such requests are believed to be more effective than those from the Parish Council. We are exploring the possibility of purchasing a portable speed monitoring sign, the cost and use of which would be shared with neighbouring parishes. Cllr. Bown has conducted an extensive survey of grit bins throughout the parish and some extra and replacement bins have been ordered. We hope these will be in place and all bins filled before the onset of winter. We have had all of the play equipment at the Recreation Ground inspected by Amber Valley Borough Council and they have been asked to carry out the remedial work identified as being necessary. By the time this article is published, the Parish Council youth club should be up and running at the Glebe, as we expect to open on the 3rd November. To begin with, we will operate from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, for young people of our parish who are in school year 6 up to and including 17-year-olds. We are still rather short of volunteer helpers and I appeal to anyone who feels they can give a few hours on a regular basis to contact the Parish Council.
I am pleased to report that we did, at last, find a firm which could clean and refurbish the war memorial and this has now been done.

The affordable housing development proposed by Amber Valley Housing on land to the rear of Coasthill, Crich, will be going through the planning application process in the fairly near future. If it is granted, one of the conditions will be that the properties are for the people of our parish or those with strong connections to it, and that they remain so in perpetuity.

The delay to the new surgery is a big disappointment to us all and the Parish Council has written to the Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust and to both our local MPs to express our frustration.
As I mentioned in my last article, there are some unstable gravestones in the burial ground which need to be made safe or laid flat. The Clerk has managed to contact some of the families concerned who will be having the necessary remedial work done to their loved-ones’ memorials. The remaining ones, for which as yet, attempts to contact families have proved fruitless will probably have been laid flat by the time this article is published. We do hope this does not cause any distress. We have done our best over a fairly long period of time to publicise our intentions and to contact the families involved. The memorial stones which are to be laid flat are as follows:

151 F and A Wass
177 W and E Smith
178 G & H Smith
224 I Gregory
232 E and J Dawes
240 J and S Yeomans
245 T and H Brooks
246 A and C Storer
369 M Fowles
381 M Worth
385 W Goodall
414 S and D Stewart
459 M and E Hunt
