Frequently considered a landmark of Chinese cinema, this is the story of a young student (played by Gong Li) forced to become a concubine to an ageing warlord in 1920s China. Set in his palatial compound, the film shows the intrigues among the wife, concubines and servants in glowing colour. We are hoping to get a Chinese theme for this evening including some food.
(USA, 123 mins)
Based on a true story, "The Great Debaters" chronicles the journey of a group of underdog students from a small Deep-South African American college. They are, using the power of words, shaped into a historically elite debate team by Professor Melvin Tolson, a brilliant but volatile debate-team-coach.
We will pick two films from the crop of excellent films currently being released.
