Hello again,
Well, it certainly doesn’t feel like three months have passed since the last newsletter!
Can I firstly say a big thank you to all the people who have started to ring in with details of any scrap vans/vehicles seen in the rural area. Although our community doesn’t appear to have suffered too much, the theft of lead and metal is still big business, so please continue to report any sightings. It really does help us to identify and deal with those responsible.
At the last Rural Panel Meeting it was decided that one of our priorities should be
‘Distraction Burglary Awareness’.
Unfortunately, the victims of distraction burglars, or bogus callers, are usually elderly, although not always. I do not want to worry you all, but it is a sad fact of life that some people make a living out of conning and deceiving others. Although, I am pleased to say, the vast majority of us are good law-abiding people, it only takes one to spoil it for others.
Here are a few guidelines to follow if someone you do not recognise comes to your door.
If you have a door chain, use it. If not, try and get one fitted.
Ask for ID. If they show you a card check it thoroughly. If they do not have ID or you are not 100% happy with it, ask for details of their organisation, use your telephone and ring them to verify.
If you are unable to make these enquiries yourself or are still not confident in what you are being told, then ring the police.
People who are genuine and work for these companies are used to these checks. It is in their interest to catch the bogus callers too.
If you have a genuine suspicion about someone who calls at your door, never be afraid to ring us. The police are available 24 hours a day.
Thank you for reading this. Please remember, we are lucky enough to live in one of the safest areas in Derbyshire. We just want it to remain this way!
