Alex Butler, Group Scout Leader.
Many of you will have seen posters around the area asking for volunteers to ‘Save our Cubs.’ I am delighted to say that these posters, produced by our cubs, were a huge success and we now have a strong leadership team for our Cubs. 1st Crich Scout Group provides Scouting activities for boys and girls from 6 to 14 with older members joining one of the District Explorer Scout Groups. With more members than ever we always welcome interest from people who are able to support the group as a leader, fund-raiser or by helping with the upkeep of the Scout Hut and grounds.
With support from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited) we have been able to make considerable improvements to the Scout Hut. These include fully rewiring and providing a new kitchen and new, accessible toilets. With these improvements we are delighted to be able to make the Scout Hut available to the local community, not-for-profit and charitable groups. The Scout Hut provides a versatile, affordable space and has already been used for activities including family activity days, Zumba, street dance, keep-fit and Pilates, many of which have been organised by Village Games or Crich’s own Tors Community Sports Club. We are currently fundraising to continue to improve the hut for Scouting and other local groups and are very grateful for support from the Parish Council.
In July our Beavers joined over 1000 others at the County’s Beaver Bonanza where they enjoyed a day of fun and sun themed around the elements of earth, air, wind and fire. The Cubs enjoyed a weekend camp in September where they learnt many new skills including fire-lighting, whittling, pioneering, cooking and washing up! The Cubs also celebrated winning the District’s Cub Quiz, their second consecutive year holding the trophy. As well as enjoying a summer camp the Scouts have recently held a camp fire and litter pick on Crich Chase and taken photos around the village for their photography badge.
On Sunday 9th October the first Crich Conker Championship was held at the Scout Hut. This event was planned in partnership with Tors Community Sports Club to raise funds to provide new flooring in the Hut. The event was very well attended and the Hut reverberated to the sound of conkers cracking! Craft activities were provided by Crich Children’s Centre and toys from Crich Toy Library. As well as providing an entertaining afternoon for all, the event raised £230. Many thanks to all involved.
